Upper Dolpo Trek
STARTLE YOURSELF BY THE UNCLUTTERED VICINITY OF DOLPA!!
Extended in the vast area of the Mid-Western Region of Nepal, Dolpa is the largest district that is isolated in the Tibetan corner of Nepal. Dolpa is situated in the Shey Phoksundo National park of mid-western Nepal, behind the Dhaulagiri massif, towards the Tibetan plateau which is sliced off by a series of very high passes and is closed due to heavy snow most of the year.
The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and extraordinary Himalayan journeys, taking you deep into the hidden landscapes of northwestern Nepal. This demanding adventure combines high mountain passes, dramatic barren landscapes, traditional Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient monasteries, and the unforgettable turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake.
The journey is designed for experienced trekkers who appreciate wilderness, cultural discovery, and long days in remote mountain terrain. Much of the route has limited infrastructure, making camping an important part of the experience. Upper Dolpo lies within Shey-Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park, which protects a remarkable Trans-Himalayan ecosystem.
At Himalaya Family Adventure, we organize the Upper Dolpo Trek with experienced local trekking staff, careful logistical planning, appropriate camping arrangements, and a strong focus on safety and responsible travel.
This is a very perfect place if you’re a travel lover who loves the resilient place far away from civilization with modernity. This must be your go-to place in your traveling list.

Trip Overview
UPPER DOLPA TREK: AN ESCAPADE OF TWENTY EIGHT DAYS TO TAKE YOU TO ANOTHER PART OF THE WORLD.
The Upper Dolpo Trek is a journey into a part of Nepal where the landscape, culture, and lifestyle remain remarkably different from the country’s more popular trekking regions. Far from the busy trails of Everest and Annapurna, Upper Dolpo Trek offers a feeling of true exploration. Here, wide Himalayan valleys, high passes, ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional villages, and vast barren landscapes create an experience that is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Our journeyto Upper Dolpo Trek begins with travel toward the remote Dolpo region, followed by trekking through the extraordinary landscapes of Shey-Phoksundo National Park. The park is home to diverse wildlife and vegetation ranging from lower-altitude forests to high alpine and Trans-Himalayan landscapes. It is also known for species such as Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and the elusive snow leopard.
In Upper Dolpo Trek, One of the earliest major attractions is Phoksundo Lake, famous for its striking turquoise-blue color and dramatic mountain setting. The lake is one of the defining landmarks of the Dolpo region and provides one of the most memorable moments of the entire trek. The surrounding cliffs, waterfalls, forests, and traditional Ringmo village create an extraordinary combination of natural beauty and Himalayan culture. Shey-Phoksundo National Park identifies Phoksundo Lake, Ringmo, Upper Dolpo, monasteries, and local culture among its major attractions.
Beyond Phoksundo, the landscape gradually becomes more rugged and distinctly Trans-Himalayan. The trail crosses high mountain passes and enters broad, dry valleys surrounded by towering peaks. The contrast between the green lower valleys and the barren high-altitude landscape is one of the special characteristics of the Upper Dolpo Trek.
As we travel deeper into Dolpo, traditional villages become important cultural highlights. Places such as Saldang, Namgung, Shey, and Dho Tarap reflect a distinctive Tibetan Buddhist heritage that has developed over centuries. Stone houses, barley fields, mani walls, prayer flags, chortens, and monasteries provide a glimpse into a lifestyle shaped by altitude, isolation, religion, and the harsh Himalayan environment.
The spiritual character of the region becomes particularly evident around Shey Gompa, one of the most important religious sites in Dolpo. The monastery and surrounding landscape provide a peaceful setting to learn about the region’s Buddhist traditions and the spiritual connection between local communities and the mountains.
Another special feature of the Upper Dolpo Trek is the opportunity to experience traditional Himalayan life at close range. In many villages, people continue to depend on agriculture, livestock, local trade, and seasonal activities. The journey is therefore not simply about crossing mountains; it is also about meeting communities and understanding how people have adapted to one of the world’s most challenging environments.
At Himalaya Family Adventure, we believe this is where the true value of Upper Dolpo Trek lies. We do not want our guests to simply rush from campsite to campsite. Our experienced guides and local staff encourage travelers to slow down, observe the landscape, respect local customs, and enjoy the stories and experiences that make Dolpo unique.
Because Upper Dolpo Trek is a restricted trekking region, special permits are required, and trekking regulations are more controlled than on many mainstream routes. The Nepal Tourism Board currently lists Upper Dolpo as a restricted area and requires the appropriate special trekking permit. The region also requires a licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS under Nepal’s current trekking provisions.
The remote nature of the trek also means that logistics must be taken seriously. Camping, food supplies, staff, transportation, permits, and emergency planning need to be organized in advance. This is one reason why choosing an experienced trekking company is particularly important for an Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal.
For travelers who want a similarly remote Himalayan experience but with a different landscape, our Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek offers a wonderful combination of remote villages, Buddhist culture, and spectacular mountain scenery. Travelers looking for a classic Himalayan experience can also explore our Gokyo Valley Trek or Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Special Attractions of the Upper Dolpo Trek
Phoksundo Lake
Phoksundo Lake is undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights of the journey. Its deep turquoise-blue water, dramatic cliffs, surrounding mountains, and peaceful atmosphere create an unforgettable Himalayan scene. The lake is officially recognized as one of the major attractions of Shey-Phoksundo National Park.
High Himalayan Passes
The Upper Dolpo trek crosses challenging high-altitude passes where the landscape opens into vast mountain panoramas. Crossing these passes requires physical preparation and careful pacing, but the sense of achievement and the views from the top are among the most rewarding experiences of the trek.
Shey Gompa
Shey Gompa is an important spiritual destination in Upper Dolpo Trek. Surrounded by dramatic Himalayan landscapes, it provides an opportunity to experience the region’s ancient Buddhist heritage and peaceful mountain spirituality.
Traditional Dolpo Villages
Villages such as Saldang, Namgung, Shey, and Dho Tarap offer an authentic glimpse into traditional Dolpo life. Their stone houses, fields, monasteries, prayer flags, and remote setting make them some of the most fascinating cultural stops on the route.
Ancient Tibetan Buddhist Culture
The cultural identity of Upper Dolpo Trek is strongly connected with Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Monasteries, chortens, mani walls, prayer wheels, and sacred landscapes are an important part of everyday life. Traveling respectfully through these communities allows visitors to experience a culture that has remained closely connected to the Himalayan environment.
Dramatic Trans-Himalayan Landscapes
Upper Dolpo Trek is famous for its extraordinary contrast of landscapes. Green forests and river valleys gradually give way to dry, windswept hills, rocky cliffs, high alpine meadows, and vast barren mountains. This unique scenery makes Dolpo very different from Nepal’s greener trekking regions.
Himalayan Wildlife
The wider Shey-Phoksundo National Park supports an impressive variety of wildlife, including Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and snow leopard habitat. More than 200 bird species have also been recorded in the park. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but traveling through this protected landscape adds another dimension to the adventure.
Authentic Wilderness Camping
Unlike many popular Nepal trekking routes, Upper Dolpo Trek has limited lodge infrastructure, so camping is an important part of the experience. Nights beneath clear Himalayan skies, surrounded by remote mountains, create a genuine wilderness atmosphere.
A Journey Far Beyond the Ordinary
The greatest attraction of the Upper Dolpo Trek is its sense of remoteness. There are fewer travelers, fewer modern facilities, and fewer distractions. With the support of Himalaya Family Adventure, you can experience this extraordinary region while our local trekking staff take care of the practical details, camping logistics, route navigation, and day-to-day support.

We can explore parts of the lakeshore and visit Ringmo village, observing its traditional houses, Buddhist monuments and unique Himalayan lifestyle. Depending on local conditions, we may also visit nearby cultural sites and viewpoints.

The scenery becomes distinctly Trans-Himalayan, with rocky mountains, open valleys and very little vegetation. The combination of altitude and rugged terrain makes this a demanding day, so our guide maintains a slow and comfortable pace.
We reach the camping area near Kang La Base Camp and settle in for the night. The camp may be quiet and cold, but the remote mountain surroundings create a genuine expedition atmosphere.

Today is one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of the Upper Dolpo Trek. We start early and gradually climb toward Kang La Pass, one of the major high passes on the route.
The ascent requires patience and steady pacing because of the altitude. Once we reach the pass, the surrounding Himalayan landscape opens dramatically, providing a powerful sense of achievement.
Kang-La Pass is at an elevation of 5,360 meters from where you can have an attractive view of deserted valleys, Crystal Mountain, and U-shaped canyon towards Shey-Gompa. From the pass, we begin a long descent toward the sacred region of Shey Gompa (4400m.). The landscape around Shey is characterized by rugged mountains, dry valleys and distinctive Tibetan Buddhist heritage.
After reaching camp, we have time to rest and recover from the demanding crossing.

Another major adventure begins today as we leave Shey and climb toward Saldang La Pass. The trail moves through dry, rugged terrain with expansive views of the surrounding Himalayan valleys.
The ascent is gradual but demanding because of the altitude. We walk at a controlled pace, taking regular breaks and allowing everyone to adjust to the thin mountain air.
After crossing the pass, we descend toward Namgung, a remote traditional settlement. The appearance of cultivated fields and stone houses at such a high altitude demonstrates how remarkably local communities have adapted to the environment.

You follow the Nang Chu River on your path to Tiling and Lurigaon village. You walk moreover to the Yangze village. Here, you can discover the Yangze region, Bon-Po monastery, and Panzang River.
The landscape feels almost untouched, with enormous open spaces, rocky ridges and distant snow-covered peaks. Along the way, we may encounter local people traveling between villages or working in the fields.
Yangjer Gompa and the surrounding area provide another opportunity to experience the religious and cultural character of this remote region.

The trail crosses dry mountain slopes and follows valleys where traditional settlements and cultivated land appear unexpectedly among the rugged surroundings. Although we gradually lose some elevation, the terrain remains challenging and remote.
The longer path crosses through Nishalgaon and Shimengaon to Sibu. We pick the shorter trail by returning our path to Saldang village. The trail then heads to Namdo village which has around 400 residents and stretches over 5 km. There is a Namdo monastery near the Nam Khong River. You then hike for two more hours to enter Sibu.
Our experienced camping crew ensures that camp is ready and a warm meal is waiting when we arrive. The support of the team becomes particularly valuable during these long wilderness sections.

The surrounding landscape is vast and beautifully barren, with rocky mountains stretching toward the horizon. As we approach the base camp, the effects of altitude become more noticeable, making slow and steady walking especially important.
After reaching camp, we have time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the following day’s high-pass crossing.

We continue toward Tokyu Gaon (4200m.), a traditional settlement with a strong cultural identity. Reaching the village after crossing the pass is a memorable moment in the journey.

After arriving in Dho Tarap, we have time to settle into camp and explore the surrounding area. This is a wonderful place to experience traditional Dolpo culture.

Dho Tarap – one of the highest settlements of the world, is the junction of tracks leading to Mustang, Jomsom, and Tibet. Dwellers consist of mostly Magars and Tibetans. There are a lot of Buddhist shrines in Dho Tarap. Bon Gompa in Dho Tarap is a famous one.
This is also a relaxed opportunity for photography and interaction with local communities. We encourage our guests to be respectful when photographing people, homes and religious places.

We now begin our long descent from the high Tarap Valley toward Tarap Khola. As we lose altitude, the environment gradually becomes greener and warmer.
The trail follows the river through a dramatic valley surrounded by cliffs and rocky mountains. After spending many days in the dry high-altitude landscape, the return of more vegetation creates a noticeable change.
The Trek descending towards a valley that eventually turns into a canyon as you trek more. The trek crosses through bushes of junipers and ultimately leads to the terminal of Tarap Chu and the Lang Khola. You then arrive at Kamakharka for ending the trek.
Although the altitude is decreasing, the distance makes today a reasonably long trekking day. Our guide maintains a comfortable pace and schedules regular rest stops.

After reaching Khanigaon, our camping crew prepares the evening meal while we enjoy a relaxed evening and reflect on the remarkable journey so far.

You begin your day trek accompanying a trail to Lalberi village. Then, you move through a forest, descend to a ravine then hike alongside the river. You then arrive in Tarakot after a total of 4-5 hours of trek from Khanigaun. Tarakot is a little town that once used to be a fortress. It used to be the capital of Tichorung Kingdom and was a famous trading point. Although it has dropped the energy it used to share, it still has the charm to captivate travelers.
The trail follows the valley through increasingly green surroundings, with the river and dramatic hills providing a beautiful backdrop. The reduced altitude makes the walking easier compared with the high passes earlier in the trek.
Tarakot provides a final opportunity to experience the character of Dolpo before returning toward Dunai and Juphal.

The path following the Thuli Bheri continues. You pass through Dhupichaur, Rupgad, Kalagaonda, and Motipur to ultimately arrive in Juphal. The long and arduous trek finally terminates at Juphal.
Reaching Juphal marks the end of our long wilderness trekking journey. From the turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake and ancient monasteries to high Himalayan passes and remote villages, we have experienced some of the most extraordinary landscapes in Nepal.
Depending on the condition of the group and the flight schedule, our guide may adjust this day or divide the walking into separate sections.

Day 26 is kept as a spare and contingency day for the Upper Dolpo Trek. Because this is a remote Himalayan region, flights, weather, trail conditions, and other local circumstances can sometimes affect the planned itinerary. Having an additional day provides valuable flexibility and helps us avoid unnecessary pressure during the journey.
If the trek has been completed according to schedule, you can use this day to relax in Kathmandu, explore the city, enjoy some last-minute shopping, or simply recover after the demanding wilderness adventure. If an earlier flight or trekking section has been delayed because of unfavorable weather or other unforeseen circumstances, our Himalaya Family Adventure team can use this day to adjust the itinerary and protect your international departure schedule as much as possible.
This spare day is particularly important for Upper Dolpo Trekking, where mountain flights are more sensitive to weather conditions than road travel. We always recommend allowing some flexibility rather than planning an immediate international departure after returning from the remote mountains.

Breakfast
Today marks the final day of your unforgettable Upper Dolpo Trek with Himalaya Family Adventure. After breakfast, you will have some free time depending on your international flight schedule. Our representative will meet you at your hotel and provide a comfortable transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport according to your flight schedule. We will assist you with the departure arrangements and say goodbye as you begin your journey home.
Your Upper Dolpo adventure may be coming to an end, but the memories of Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, ancient Buddhist villages, high Himalayan passes, remote landscapes, and the warm hospitality of the Dolpo people will remain with you long after you leave Nepal.

Travel Documents & Permits
A valid passport, Nepal visa, travel insurance and necessary trekking documents are essential for the Upper Dolpo Trek. Upper Dolpo is a restricted trekking area, so travelers need the appropriate Restricted Area Permit in addition to the applicable national park and trekking documentation. We arrange the required permits and official procedures before you enter the trekking region. Keep your passport, insurance details and copies of important documents safely in a waterproof pouch. It is also wise to keep digital copies on your phone or email. Permit regulations and fees can change, so our team will confirm the latest requirements before your departure.
Physical Preparation
Upper Dolpo is a challenging high-altitude camping trek and requires good physical preparation. You should be comfortable walking approximately 5–8 hours on consecutive days, often over uneven and rocky trails. The route includes several significant climbs and high passes, so endurance is more important than speed. We recommend starting regular walking, hiking, stair climbing or cardiovascular exercise several weeks before the trek. Include some longer weekend hikes if possible. During the trek, our guides maintain a sensible pace with regular breaks rather than rushing. Good preparation will allow you to enjoy the scenery, culture and wilderness with greater confidence.
Packing & Equipment
Packing correctly is particularly important because Upper Dolpo is a remote camping trek with limited opportunities to purchase or replace equipment along the route. Bring good-quality trekking boots, warm layers, thermal clothing, a waterproof jacket, gloves, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, trekking poles and a suitable sleeping bag. Your sleeping bag should be appropriate for cold high-altitude nights. Keep essential personal items, medicines, documents and valuables in your daypack or waterproof bag. Avoid unnecessary luggage because lighter packing makes walking much more comfortable. Our team provides a detailed packing checklist and checks essential equipment before the trek begins.
Altitude & Acclimatization
Altitude is one of the most important considerations on the Upper Dolpo Trek. The route gradually rises from the lower valleys to elevations above 5,000 meters at some mountain passes. We include appropriate acclimatization and rest days, particularly around Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa, while maintaining a gradual trekking pace. Stay well hydrated, eat regularly and avoid alcohol during high-altitude sections. Tell your guide immediately if you experience unusual headache, dizziness, nausea, severe tiredness, breathing difficulty or other symptoms of altitude sickness. Our guides monitor the group’s condition throughout the journey and can adjust the itinerary when necessary.
Weather & Best Seasons
Upper Dolpo experiences a dry, high-altitude Himalayan climate, but conditions can change quickly. Spring and autumn are generally considered the most favorable periods for trekking, with relatively stable conditions and good mountain visibility. Summer can also be possible because Dolpo lies in Nepal’s rain-shadow region, although mountain weather and flight conditions can still be unpredictable. Winter brings very cold temperatures and heavy snow, which can make high passes difficult or inaccessible. We always monitor the weather before and during the journey because flights to and from Juphal are particularly sensitive to mountain weather.
Travel Insurance & Emergency Evacuation
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should specifically cover high-altitude trekking in Nepal and emergency medical evacuation. Before traveling, check your policy carefully for the maximum altitude covered and whether helicopter evacuation is included. Keep your insurance policy number and emergency contact information easily accessible. Upper Dolpo is remote, and medical facilities are limited compared with Kathmandu. If a serious emergency occurs, our guides will coordinate the appropriate response and communicate with our Kathmandu office and relevant local authorities. Any evacuation costs should be claimed through your insurance provider according to your policy.
Food & Drinking Water
Food during the Upper Dolpo Trek is prepared by our experienced camping kitchen team. Meals are designed to provide sufficient energy for long days of walking and generally include rice, noodles, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, soup, dal, eggs and other available ingredients. We encourage a balanced diet and regular meals throughout the trek. Safe drinking water is essential at high altitude. Carry reusable bottles with a combined capacity of around 2–3 liters and use treated or properly filtered water. Avoid relying on untreated natural water sources, even when the water appears clean. Carry some personal snacks such as energy bars, nuts or dried fruit for longer trekking days.
Money & Communication
Upper Dolpo is a remote region where modern banking facilities and reliable internet are extremely limited. Complete your necessary cash arrangements in Kathmandu or before entering the trekking area. Carry sufficient Nepali rupees in small denominations for personal expenses, tips and unexpected needs. Mobile phone coverage varies greatly, and some sections may have no signal at all. Internet access should not be expected throughout the trek. We recommend informing family or friends that communication may be irregular. A power bank and spare batteries are useful because charging facilities are limited in remote camping areas.
Local Culture & Responsible Travel
Upper Dolpo Trek is home to communities with distinctive Tibetan Buddhist traditions and a way of life closely connected to the mountains. Respect local customs, monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, chortens and religious ceremonies. Always ask permission before photographing people, particularly monks and local residents. Avoid touching religious objects unnecessarily and walk around Buddhist monuments in the appropriate direction. We encourage responsible trekking by minimizing plastic waste, respecting wildlife and keeping campsites clean. Our Himalaya Family Adventure team works with local guides, porters and communities, helping ensure that tourism benefits the people who live in this remote region.

Flights & Transportation
The usual approach involves flying from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, followed by trekking. After completing the trek, we return through Juphal and Nepalgunj before flying back to Kathmandu.
Mountain flights are highly dependent on weather and visibility. Delays and cancellations can occur, which is why we recommend maintaining flexibility and why our itinerary includes a spare day.
Our team monitors flight conditions and helps coordinate alternative arrangements where possible. If a delay affects the trekking schedule, we adjust the itinerary according to the available time and conditions while keeping safety as the priority.
Travel Insurance & Emergency Support
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should cover high-altitude trekking, medical treatment and emergency evacuation. Check your policy carefully to make sure the maximum trekking altitude is covered.
Emergency helicopter evacuation is not included in the standard trekking price. If an emergency occurs, our team will assist with the necessary coordination, while the cost is normally handled through the traveler’s insurance policy.
Medical facilities are very limited in remote Upper Dolpo. Our guides carry a basic first-aid kit, but trekkers should bring their own essential medications and appropriate personal medical supplies.
