Travel Insurance Guidelines

Why Travel Insurance is Mandatory

Trekking and traveling in the high Himalayas involve unique risks—from extreme altitudes and remote trails to unpredictable weather. To ensure safety and peace of mind, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests joining our treks and expeditions across Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. Your policy must be secured prior to arrival in Kathmandu and remain active for the entire duration of your itinerary.

Required Coverage Checklist

Standard travel insurance policies often exclude high-altitude activities or remote evacuations. Ensure your policy explicitly covers the following:

  • High-Altitude Trekking: Coverage for trekking up to the maximum elevation of your specific itinerary (e.g., up to 5,500m / 18,000ft for Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit).

  • Emergency Helicopter Evacuation: Direct air ambulance rescue in case of severe acute mountain sickness (AMS), injury, or illness in roadless regions.

  • Medical Expenses & Hospitalization: Full coverage for emergency medical treatment, doctor consultations, and hospital stays in Nepal.

  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption: Coverage for non-refundable trip costs if you must cancel or curtail your journey due to emergency, illness, or family crisis.

  • Flight Cancellations & Delays: Protection against domestic flight disruptions in mountain airports (such as Lukla, Jomsom, or Tumlingtar) caused by severe weather.

  • Baggage Loss & Theft: Coverage for delayed, stolen, or damaged personal gear, passports, and equipment.

Recommended Insurance Providers by Region

Different insurance carriers specialize in adventure travel depending on your home country. Commonly used providers by our international guests include:

Region Recommended Insurance Providers
USA & Canada World Nomads, Allianz Global Assistance, Travel Guard, Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance
UK & Europe True Traveller, Campbell Irvine, World Nomads, Dogtag Insurance
Australia & NZ Cover-More, Fast Cover, World Nomads
Asia & Global IATI Insurance, Global Rescue, Bupa Global

Note: Always read your policy’s fine print. If your policy has an altitude limit (e.g., capped at 3,000m), request a specific high-altitude add-on rider from your insurer.

Verification & Emergency Procedure

      • Pre-Departure Submission: A copy of your insurance policy—including the 24/7 emergency assistance phone number and policy number—must be provided to our team during your pre-trip briefing in Kathmandu.

      • Claim Settlement Policy: Medical and evacuation providers in Nepal require immediate policy verification. In case of emergency evacuation, our operational team coordinates directly with your insurer’s 24-hour medical assistance desk to authorize rescue logistics.
