Mustang Region

The Mustang Region is one of Nepal’s most fascinating Himalayan destinations, known for its dramatic landscapes, ancient Buddhist culture, traditional mountain villages, sacred pilgrimage sites, and distinctive desert-like scenery. Located in the rain-shadow of the Himalayas, Mustang offers a remarkable contrast to the lush green landscapes found in many other parts of Nepal.
Mustang is broadly experienced through Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang, each offering its own unique attractions. The region stretches from the Kali Gandaki Valley toward the high Himalayan landscapes near the Tibetan Plateau. The inner Himalayan areas of Mustang are characterized by dry, rugged terrain and a cold-desert environment.
Jomsom, Marpha, Tukuche, Kagbeni, and Muktinath are among the best-known destinations in the region. The journey through Lower Mustang combines spectacular mountain views with charming villages, apple orchards, traditional houses, monasteries, and the deep Kali Gandaki Valley.
Further north lies Upper Mustang, a remote and culturally distinctive area often described as a hidden Himalayan kingdom. The historic walled city of Lo Manthang is one of its major attractions, surrounded by ancient monasteries, traditional houses, caves, and remarkable landscapes. Upper Mustang was historically a separate kingdom and was opened to foreign trekkers in 1994.
The region is also rich in Tibetan-influenced Buddhist traditions. Ancient monasteries, prayer walls, chortens, colorful prayer flags, and centuries-old cultural practices provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the heritage of the Himalayan communities of Mustang. Place to visit around Lo Manthang, including Luri and Tashi Kabum, Jhong Cave, Chhuser, Namgyal, Thingar, Ghar Gompa, Royal Palace, Old castle, Walled city  contain ancient religious and artistic heritage.
Another major attraction is Muktinath, an important pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. The combination of spiritual heritage, dramatic mountain scenery, and diverse local traditions makes Mustang a remarkable destination for both cultural travelers and adventure seekers.
For trekkers, Mustang offers a wide range of experiences, including Upper Mustang Trek, Lower Mustang Trek, Jomsom–Muktinath Trek, and customized Himalayan journeys. Upper Mustang is a restricted trekking area and requires the appropriate special trekking permit; current trekking regulations should always be checked before travel.
