Overview
FULL OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM !!
Dakshinkali Temple, 22 kilometers south of the heart of Kathmandu and on the end of the Kathmandu Valley, is a divine Hindu temple famous for praying in the Bloodshed. Twice a week, male goats and roosters are sacrificed here to the goddess Kali, who is said to be starved for blood. You can watch this event at the temple in the hills if you have guts. For animal lovers, this place won’t be suited. Once the libation of animals is made, the meat fits in the pot, the wanderers deliver all the ingredients to make barbeque and feast themselves beneath the shade of trees. Saturday is the big sacrificial day and also bloodstreams flow up to Tuesday.
Taking about our other destination Pharming is a very alluring and lovely place. Pharping, about 19km south of Kathmandu is a culturally flourishing and blooming Newari town recognized with the holy site of Hinduism and Buddhism where Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava, known as lotus born God) accomplished the level of a Mahamudra Vidyadhara and an antiquated Buddhist pilgrimage site that has been adopted by a large number of Tibetans and other Nepalese Buddhist devotees. This village is popular for sacred Buddhist monasteries, Shesnarayan temple, Bajra Yogini temple, Gorakhnath temple, and Guru Padmasambhava meditation cave. It is understood that he got enlightenment at Asur Cave. Lately, numerous Buddhist monasteries have been built in the area. The best way to visit the Pharping is to join other wanderers on the clock-wise pilgrimage circuit (parikrama in Nepalese, kora in Tibetan).
Kali worship is much in the same vein. She is seen as the mother that defends the child from all evil. You can comprehend she looks horrible when in anger, but she is your mommy. The angry form is just another FACE of her that comes out when you need a strong hand. She is not slaughtering you but destroying something that is threatening you. She is shielding you from destruction and hence she becomes the demigoddess of destruction. When you say she is the goddess of destruction, she is not destroying creation or is a mad evil goddess BUT she is a goddess protecting you from disaster and destruction wrecked by the evil of the world. So, as a devotee of Kali, you worship that motherly love.
That love which drives her to take the form of the destroyer to protect you, her child. She may look threatening but you know that is only to the evil things sharing your vicinity, she is still your loving mother and you, her child that called for her nourishment. Pilgrims seek assurance from Goddess Kali on demons/ evils which give a menace and seek power for the strength within themselves. Locals/Nepalese normally came here when they buy a new vehicle (to protect from accidents) and travel overseas (seek safe journey) etc.
On the way to or way from Pharping and Dakshinkali, we can tour Chobar Gorge. According to myths, Buddhist deity Manjushree chopped out the hill with a single swipe of her mighty sword freed the water out creating the Chobar Gorge. Countless nagas were scrubbed out of the valley with the flowing away water but Kartotak, king of nagas (snakes) made it nearby Taudaha pond beside the road to Pharping. Geologists and theologians seldom find common ground but everyone accepts that eons ago Kathmandu valley was a lake and the hill of Swayambhunath was an island.
